IMA-Europe is providing guidance and facilitating the implementation of the REACH and CLP Regulations in the Industrial Minerals sector.

REACH is the Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals.

It came into force on 1 June 2007. Like more than 100,000 substances marketed in the EU, Industrial Minerals have to face new obligations under REACH. A number of Industrial Minerals are exempted from REACH registration obligations as they are “naturally occurring substances not chemically modified” (REACH Regulation, Annex V.7 on exemptions on the obligation to register).

For other Industrial Minerals which do fall under the scope of the REACH Regulation, IMA-Europe is managing REACH consortia and provides specific support to its members for the completion and submission of registration dossiers, notably via the IMA REACH Hub.

CLP stands for the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on the Classification, Labeling and Packaging of substances and mixtures.

The CLP Regulation entered into force on 20 January 2009. It introduces the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (UN GHS) into Europe, which means new classification criteria, hazard symbols (pictograms) and labelling phrases.

IMA-Europe assisted its members in meeting the CLP requirements for:

  • The classification and labelling of relevant substances by 1 December 2010 and for
  • The notification of all classifications of these substances to the Inventory of European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) by 3 January 2011.

The deadline to classify, label and package mixtures in line with the CLP requirements is 1 June 2015.

SDS (Safety Data Sheets)

At the request if its members, IMA-Europe is managing an Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) database including relevant information for all the minerals in the IMA-Europe portfolio. Within this database, template Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for the following minerals:

  • Andalusite
  • Bentonite
  • Calcined kaolin
  • Cristobalite sand and flour
  • Feldspar
  • n Kaolin
  • Kaolinitic clay
  • Lime substances
  • Nepheline syenite
  • Mica
  • Quartz
  • Sepiolite
  • Talc
  • Vermiculite

Disclaimer: These SDSs should be considered as a recommendation and do not in any means replace the SDS issued by the individual companies, who hold the final responsibility for their products.
